There’s never really a “good” time for your headlights to start malfunctioning, but “in the middle of the night during a 10-hour endurance race” has to be among the least ideal.
Yet that’s exactly what happened to the race-winning Cadillac V-Series.R in the closing laps of the 2024 IMSA Petit Le Mans.

That would be intense.
And here I thought a night autocross is wild.
I ran an EC class Corvette at the VIR Champcar 24hr, and it had two very small old style round headlights mounted on the front crashbar. It didn't have a hood or front bumper cover, and the lights were mounted in the center.
There was so little light at night, I had to latch on to any car that came past me, and eventually the overall leader, the Freedom Autosports Miata, passed. I latched onto them, and we proceeded to carve through traffic, with me about ten feet off their taillights. I saved so much gas lifting on the straights in order not to pass them, I ran two and a half hours on my stint.
Could have ended badly in many ways -- overtaking car invisible to the the overtaken.
should have gotten a mechanical black flag.
I was there. The problem was intermittent, near the end of the race, and sometimes one light and not the other, so it didn't get black-flagged. And it eventually fixed itself. They probably should have flagged it, but luckily for the 01 they didn't, and they went on to win the whole race. It was pretty wild seeing this black shadow descend into turn 10a/b from the back straight!

If they got a black flag, how would they see it?

Reminds me of the time I was doing a challenge race on GT6, racing Spa in a mini endurance race. Had some very, very fast competition, so I decided that a formula car might level the playing field a bit. Was great until the game started throwing in a day / night cycle at me midway through the race. Spa, turns out, is a VERY dark place, and formula cars don't have lights.
Watching the video, I almost think there's something loose in the wiring. That flickering on the bumps suggests as much.

Those cars have got screens that display the flags dont they?
