Sure, Honda had the Prelude and Datsun had the 200SX, but Mercury had the LN7.
How to best sell the LN7? Who is the core market? What’s new for 1982?
To answer all those questions and more, Ford offered this promotional video for dealerships–and on Laserdisc, no less.

And the channel has a lot of other really neat videos, like an '81 Firebird promo video and a Need for Speed II commercial.
There's something you don't see everyday.
I lived through that era - booooooooo
LN7 is to EXP as Sears Tele-Games Video Arcade is to Atari 2600

As if the EXP wasn't forgotten enough, the LN7 basically doesn't exist anymore.

I remember seeing Bob race his. It was too bad it was such a dog.

Good analogy. (Also, I think that one was on my SAT test.)
Something that fascinated me, at least as a kid, about the LN7.
Draw the name. It’s like you’re making a road.

Is it bad that I kind of want an LN7 for this reason?
In reply to Colin Wood :
Maybe one will show up at Mecum.
PS: Zero results for LN7 on BaT, Cars & Bids and Mecum.
Also, if you also want to peg the meter, check out the EXP with the TR package. It came with Michelin TRX tires. BaT had one a few years ago.

Well, now it's a challenge
I had forgotten about the LN7. I had an EXP for a little while that was one of my better "luck" stories. It belonged to a new neighbor who believed that it had a bad transmission. It started with a broken clutch cable that he couldn't successfully replace. I don't exactly remember the details, but something about the clutch lever was weird and had him convinced that the transmission was shot. It turned out to be a simple fix - something akin to resetting a seat belt retractor. He was happy to get a little more than scrap value for the car and was happy for me when he saw me driving it the next day. I got a nice commuter beater and a neighborhood friend out of the deal.
Ahh... memories. I had an '82 EXP in high school. Same bodywork as the LN7 other than the rear hatch. They're basically an Escort with a 2 door body. The dealership had it priced below market, they were way upside down in it because a college kid had taken it for a test drive and it overheated and the head cracked (very common failure for the 1.9). He left it on the side of the road and called them to say he wasn't interested anymore, lol.
They fixed it and wanted to be rid of it, I wanted it mainly because it had A/C unlike my Dodge Colt, and it was sadly the "coolest" thing I could afford. They loaned 17yo me a new Isuzu Spacecab pickup to go fetch my Honda Spree scooter that they agreed to take on trade along with the Colt. They included a 12mo/12k mi warranty - though it was just backed by the dealership with no terms and conditions spelled out. 2 days later I realized the clutch was slipping and I took it back to them and they replaced it for free and even put in a new battery. Totally reliable after that. Slow but got great gas mileage.
I was under no illusions that it was anything special and always thought styling was pretty dopey, especially the square eye frog face. I knew it was a tarted up version of a pretty crappy economy car. But a lot of non car people gave me compliments on how cool it looked and thought it was a real sports car. Malaise era indeed.

I’d ask how a brand-new car overheated on a test drive, but I do remember those days....
In reply to David S. Wallens :
Ha, not brand new, a few years old and about 70k miles. It was on the used car lot at an Isuzu dealer.
In reply to sevenracer :
Ah. Okay, I can see that.
And don’t forget the assorted variants.

Looked like junk back then, glad it went away so quickly. Two things about the car are still in my head. Husband of a co-worker showed up at a happy hour, wearing driving gloves. Thought it was strange so I asked him why. He was so proud of his new "sports car" he just got the gloves. Yes, a new LN7. I laughed and told him what Car & Driver said about the car. "A pinto with a hangover"
Lets move on to cars now gone that we miss. LIke my Del Sol.
