You guys are making me thankful my yard has no trees other than the woods behind the house. I haven't had to rake in 15 years. If I ever move again, I'll be looking for a yard with no trees.

I'll be looking for a yard with enough trees that there is near constant leaf coverage.  Houses in the woods have basically no landscaping upkeep.  No grass, please and thank you.

I live in the country and my house is surrounded by trees. When they fall we leave them until either the wind blows them away, or we cut the grass and they get mulched by the John Deere and return to the soil.

Paying for bags and doing all that work so somebody you pay through your taxes can take them away seems absurd to me.

I don't. And I can't blow them into the woods that don't surround my house.  So bagging leaves instead of ruining my yard with excessively thick mulched leaves is the better option. It still sucks to bag them.  And why is using services I already pay taxes for absurd?

Is this not the Rant thread and not the pick apart other people's rants thread?? cheeky

When I lived on a small urban lot, I bagged my leaves, because there was no other way to get rid of them. Mulching doesn't work when you have an 8" thick carpet of leaves over your entire yard. There were days I would fill 30+ lawn & leaf paper bags, there's no way that's going to "mulch in" on a 0.1 acre yard.

Now I live on 3.5 acres, and I just mow the leaves. Any dead spots are just character. SO - imagine that - different situations call for different solutions. Wild, I know.

I don't understand SCCA classing sometimes. Why is the F56 Mini non S in B Street Touring with the F56 S? But in Street the F56 Non S is in HS with the other non S Minis and the S in GS?

I didn't say it was.

I said it seemed absurd that someone would pay to get rid of leaves, and that local government would support that.

Call the help center. I've been on hold for 3 and a half hours, and counting.  Anything computer related with this company gives me 80 pounds of anxiety.  Because their E36 M3 NEVER WORKS.

We did that at our last house. Basically zero grass. The yard was completely covered by 2 huge oaks and a couple of pines. So the yard was leaves and detritus from previous leaves. Gutters were impossible. Just keeping the roof clean was a burden. Then, all that dirt from the yard gets tracked into the house, which then turns into its own constant battle. I'd rather mow the grass every couple of weeks.

Yeah, the gutter thing is a concern for me, I'd have to figure out a solution for that.  Everything else I can deal with.  berkeley lawns, berkeley mowing, berkeley weed trimming, berkeley raking/bagging/blowing leaves.

I know people that lived in the woods in NC Mtns and it seemed pretty low effort.  I'm not sure they even had gutters though.

You're dealing with them the wrong way.

I rake them down to the curb and the city comes by with a big tow-behind snorkulator and sucks them up.

But I try to make sure I do it once, maybe twice at the most, because doing it 5 times makes no appreciable difference in the way my yard looks from day to day.  The sycamore has a huge volume of huge leaves, and it starts dropping them before any other tree in the yard, but is the last to finish dropping them, in early December.

Possibly. Probably. But it's not like she sprained her own ankle on purpose, and I don't even mean to imply that she made any unreasonable demands of me. It was just a weekend that started out bad and continually got worse.

I mean, when a first-grader just shrugs his shoulders and nopes out of free candy, it really makes you wonder what else you've failed at.

Snuffy sounds AMAZING

OTOH I do have woods and we do just push them there. Sometimes we get lazy and don’t drop them far enough back so access to the plow truck comes in handy.

Steve, dunno what the climate/soil is like there but I’ve tried the mulching thing a couple years and we end up with this fine leaf dust that gets constantly tracked into the house all winter, sticks to the snow boots, etc. I’m inclined to just live with it but I’m not the only adult here.

The other day I priced out getting one lawn service trip to finish up the yard once the leaves finally all fall. $250. Versus a few hours on a Saturday. I can’t justify it. We’ve done 4 passes already on the half acre we maintain (by “we” I mean “my wife”) and probably have two more sessions so the grass can survive and we don’t have a mudslide next spring.

Our main trick, which I heartily recommend, is to get a 200+ square foot tarp and blow/rake onto it then drag it to the edge of the woods. Best if you drag it with a small Saabaru and the kids ride the pile.

I'm flying to New Jersey tomorrow, returning on Friday.  Also Friday, I'm supposed to hook up the Neon to the motorhome and head down to Cottageville, WV for a 2-day event that should be the actual last rallycross of the year.  I'm flying through EWR which is, apparently, an airport that the news says is getting its butt kicked because apparently people have some sort of weird problem with being expected to show up to work when their employer isn't making sure that their paycheck shows up in their bank.  Right now I have a direct flight that is scheduled to leave EWR at around noon.  Do I change up to an earlier flight that connects through IAD under the assumption that earlier flights have fewer variables to cause delays?  Or do I stay with the direct under the assumption that it'd be better to be stuck in a hub than at IAD?

This is like the grocery store checkout line dilemma!

Sitting in a Megacorp all hands meeting listen to a wide range of senior executives. Over the years I have worked with most of them and I like most of them. I think most of them are smart and well intentioned. That being said the corporate brainwashing is so aggravating. So many buzz words and focus on carefully picked narratives instead of just doing what’s needed and real performance. Silly words like paradigm, springboard, drive (insert word, inventory, delivery, capital, blah blah), voice of the customer.
Big company life is really grinding on me recently.

Customer trying to get a discount because he's a self-proclaimed "good customer" of ours:

  • Address isn't even in our system
  • Didn't buy the vehicle from us
  • Has never bought a vehicle from us
  • Last time he was in was two years ago
  • Time before that was another two years ago
  • Has no other vehicles in our system

Boy, if that's being a "good customer of ours", I'd hate to see what being a bad customer looks like.
