Those are all valid points to consider. I actually still enjoy driving the 128i, but it's hard not to take in points 1, 2 and 4.

Yeah, I've backed off of the car obsession pretty hard over the past 6 months. For the first time in years, all of our cars (sans my work car) actually fit in the garage! I'm leaning towards getting rid of it, but also trying not to make a knee-jerk emotional decision due to my current level of frustration (hence consulting The Hive!). If I do, it likely won't be until the spring time. Before I pull the trigger on anything, I would likely rent a Camaro on Turo for a few days to make sure that's the direction I want to go in.
I didn't realize you were getting rid of the 911! Ouch, sorry to hear! I know the pain of not having time to wrench. Although our kids are a good bit older, I remember the newborn days- they're tough times! Are you thinking about replacing the 911 with something else, or just cutting your losses and throwing money into a rainy day fund?

To be fair, I have the disposable income to maintain and modify the car as I like. But I did spend about a year in physical therapy for issues with my lower back and right hip, which has resulted in me becoming more adverse to wrenching in the garage, as it frequently leads to me being in a good deal of pain and walking around looking like Quasimodo for days at a time after a heavy wrenching session; which really accelerated my burnout for turning wrenches.
I can pay a shop to fix all of the woes with my BMW, but man, that adds up quick for a car that will never be worth much money. I mean, there's a good chance I would likely pay a shop to fix the A/C, which would likely result in a $2000 bill- that's around half of what I bought the entire car for! In the past ~1000 miles or so my wheel bearing has went out, I had to replace the battery, the A/C went out (again) and the parking brake just stopped holding the car on a hill... all in the last 1000 miles or less. I enjoy driving the car, but man, that's a tough pill to swallow for a "cheap car" that I don't drive much. I can't help but think: perhaps I should put these funds towards something newer that won't be as frustrating to own over the course of the next few years.
Storage isn't an issue. Money isn't an issue, per se (but let's be honest, money is technically always an issue- there's always something I would rather spend it on!). I can even make time to handle these problems- but I would far prefer to spend my time on other things that are more important to me.
Although when I read about "British cars" and "affordable", I can't help but think: aren't those two things opposing concepts?

Actually the crazy thing with the 911 is I'm not cutting losses at all. It seems I'm going to be sell it for basically what I paid for (if not slightly more). I recently bought a 2026 BMW Z4 (factory ordered) that I posted here. I love this thing and its nice to just get in, drive and not have to worry about fixing stuff. I usually have three cars but this might be the first time for awhile I'll be down to 2 cars. I might replace the Avalon beater if it kicks the bucket with something boring and practical though, no plans on getting anything "fun" for that replacement.
From a purely financial perspective, would you buy the your car for what it’s worth on the open market right now?
From a mental/physical/financial perspective, can you handle what it will and will likely need over the next few years?
Given your physical challenges around wrenching, unless you’re willing to pay a mechanic to do the tough stuff, I’d look to sell. And if you do sell, I’ve found rebound cars can be as bad as any other rebound relationships, so be careful!
I was at a similar crossroads with my Saab 9-3 project a little while ago. When the A/C went out, I added up expected costs to fix that, and other things it was going to need in the near-term. I had driven it only 3k miles over two years, and it really didn’t fit the use case I bought it for (car for my teenage sons). Adding CarPlay and a rearview camera would have been a huge ordeal (thanks, fiber optic radio cabling), so I made the decision to pass it along to a good home. I had $4k invested in parts alone, and had spent a ton of time fixing things. But it was clear it was never going to be the car I envisioned, or at least not at a reasonable cost. So I sold it at a significant loss, but it was 1000% the right move.
All I can say is if you sell it, it’ll be a helluva deal for somebody. Well chosen parts with a common mission - a car to drive. But they’re simply not worth much.
…and it will still cost that person five grand in the first year and another 2-3 annually.
Clearly you need a Porsche next.

I didn’t realize you bought a NEW Z4, that’s awesome! I just searched out your Z4 thread- beautiful color! Very nice car. I saw you bought a manual. I looked locally and the only manuals I saw (in transit) were all M40i cars with $76k stickers 😳 I dig them, but that might be a bit too rich for my lowly peasant blood lol.
My wife and I drove a Supra a few years back. The claustrophobic interior made her car sick within minutes of hopping inside, so I basically crossed it off the list. We’ve sat inside the Z4, but never drove it. It seemed a bit more airy than the Supra. My wife prefers the Z4 over the Supra and the more open interior is a bit selling point. Unfortunately, the price of entry turns me away. You’re certainly blessed to be able to afford one, very nice!
Always nice to be able to sell a car for a break even or profit situation! Of the cars I’ve owned in my life, I’ve found that to only be the case with 1/3 to 1/2 of them, with the 128i being on the far end of the “I will never come close to recouping my investment” spectrum lol.
