I always like it when people take the luxury SUVs and do actual offroading with them. How is it just around town? Given the wife hates it, a little rough?

Figured like the other cars make a thread. Too much reading GRM and texting with these guys. Can't leave anything alone. After 35 years of all Land Cruiser and Toyota Trucks, decided well as we age, we do get dumber don't we? Why not add a German Vehicle late in life to the fleet.
Ultimate douschemobile. Everybody has one. SIGH. Bought it anyways.
Interestingly the G is the only vehicle in Benz USA, where the non AMG is rarer than the AMG, since every dealer orders the G55/G63/G65.
SPECS:
- 2015 G550 (supposed to be most reliable one with the last V8 NA motor and the newest interior). I think 1971-2019 are all the same. Then the new body came out.
- 1 owner.
- 46K miles
I'd like to own a G-wagen at some point. Would you expand on why the 2015 G550 is the one to buy? Why not an AMG version?
glueguy (Forum Supporter) said:Found an AMG version on a sketch used car lot when we had some time and figured, what the heck, let's see what it's like. Yep, it didn't do anything for me. Holds a special place in our car history because it legit ran out of gas on the test drive. Coasted into a bank parking lot (closed on Sunday) and walked back to the dealership, handed them the key and told them no thanks.
Awesome that you are off-roading this. Love it.
Different strokes for different strokes, makes the world a fun place.

ironically non AMG around here are rare as hens teeth..and took me a while to find one as well (G wagen)

It is fantastic around town. Very "sports car" like.
I love how small and narrow it is to park, and it has a lot more grunt than advertised.
Wife doesn't like it due to the image, not the car. My wife DD's a 200 LC and a RCF.

The NA motor is considered the most reliable, vs the TT AMG versions which are a lot more complicated and has a lot more issues.
15 has the newest interior with the NA motor, thus people love it. There are few Youtube channels (G wheelin I think) - thats the importer of the Europa and he keeps recommending them so much, that they have mostly been bought it...
If you are not offroading like me, and don't care about reliability, I am sure AMG is great.
I do lots of 10-15 hour middle of no where (truly) offroading, and reliability is key for me.

Gotcha. Thanks for the background!
That’s fun to hear that it’s a decent rig after all. It’s never even occurred to me that they were meant for driving off road! But I now have a sneaky suspicion that in their past they had a dual role asked of them.
The changes look good. In for the updates.
In reply to dyintorace :
happy to help
My G will be around for a while - so I will continue to document it here
Got my wife one. They are way more fun than I thought it was going to be. Wife loves to drive it as she loves the visibility.

thank you very much
for years I didnt want to buy one due to the kardashian factor
my cousin lives in tokyo and he had a new 320G in 2018-2020 that I drove around a lot when I visited him. He moved on to a Bentayga and his G languished and it wouod only get driven when I visited Japan
I really fell in love with the honest nature of it
sure its cliche to talk about the door thunk or the rifle bolt door locks or external hinges - but its a bygone area I appreciate it … if i didnt live in So Cal I wouldnt be so self conscious
I really wanted a no tint on it. I looked for 2 years before I found my fishbowl 200 Lc
But UsDM G are all rear tinted. There is a company locally stillmade who does clear glases I talked to him and it cost $5,000
All glasses on G are flat for emergency change in ant part of the world - thus I thought it would be cheap - but no
So for now I will live with drug dealer tint
The G Wagon was made to be Mercedes most capable vehicle. Behind the Unimog, I think it has the longest production history for the brand.
It was designed to be spartan and sporty from the beginning. It wasn't actually seen a status symbol until after 2003 ish when The Big Tymers and some other artist would flaunt their wealth in them along with Escalades and other luxury vehicles.
A lot of people come away disappointed after driving pre-2019 G-Wagons because they were expecting a luxury vehicle. They were more tractor like than luxury SUV because they were actually work vehicles lol.

I just cant wait to put my G to work on the farm
Thanks again for opening my eyes Cherrod. You are the reason I am a G owner
I have never owned a benz (3 pedal elitist), and will never own a non G benz
I want some orange rear lights $900
some black mouldings $600
base model mirrors $1900
Not to mention $20,000 (yup) for base model oem roof rack
