Those pastel colors seem to be in vogue recently. I like them, however, it would depend on the car and intended usage. Collector cars should be the color as from the factory. special edition cars, same. Modified for fun, and daily drivers = It's your car, do as YOU wish!
However, not gonna lie, I like that particular blue in the top photo.
All of my company trucks are this color. I'm kind of partial to it. We get a lot of recognition for not driving basic white work trucks.

A major factor in picking the color for my Elise was how forgiving it would be. I wanted something that could be matched easily, so I didn't want to mess around with pearls or flakes. If you are doing a lot of tracking, the top color looks more practical from the standpoint of touchups and replacing panels. Most of all though, colors should be fun. They're taken way too seriously these days. The Porsche blue is gorgeous, but the Europa blue is more 'fun' in my eyes.
That all being said, my wife was happy with the Kawasaki Green I went with. Had she not been, I would've gone with something else. I like when she takes an interest and is a part of these kinds of decisions, even though that means we can butt heads a lot before reaching agreement.

I like your practical approach, though I also agree that colors should be fun, especially with fun cars.
Midlife crisis or not, if I'm getting a sports car, you better believe I'm going to try and pick the most ostentatious color.
(Except for a Porsche 911. If I have that kind of money, I'm going with Moonstone/Moongem)

I'd say practical and ostentatious aren't mutually exclusive, haha
I thought red was the classic midlife crisis color.
That blue is more period correct for a Europa, I think there was a similar one for the Elan.
My midlife crisis color is going to be green. The RX-7 has been blue for the last 10 years and needs a respray.

And here I thought Rosso corsa is a mid-life color. ![]()
