One of my friends' truck started clanking loudly a few weeks ago, of course it was 50 miles away.  I went and got it with my truck and trailer, and it ran enough to get down off of the trailer when we offloaded it at my shop.  After some searching for a replacement motor, we pulled it this week and I disassembled it today.  When I pulled the pan I knew it was going to be bad:

And yep, here we are:

This block will need at least a sleeve if it is salvageable.  Those marks are from the wrist pin dragging up and down the cylinder.

Amazingly, the crank, all bearings, and the other 7 rods and pistons look great.  There is barely any cylinder ridge and it is factory 4.000" bore.  This was a 270+k motor.  It's a good thing that crank and some of the rods are usable, because the used LQ9 motor he bought and we put in as a replacement is knocking.  I am pretty sure it has a spun rod bearing.  Now I guess we will try to make one decent engine out of two.

Let's hear some carnage stories (preferably with pics) that I can show the owner to cheer him up!

This was a SBC in a Chevelle I bought a couple of years ago. “Just stalled and now it won’t start.” I was able to reuse the valve covers - that was about it.

They welded that rod onto the crank, looks like.. then bad things occurred!

I had intended to run this one to failure. After surviving a day of rallycross, decided that it was close enough.

Here's one of the bearings from that engine:

That one wasn't so bad. The other two I've pulled from Boxsters went a little further.

Those are impressive!  Lots o' pieces.  Nothing salvageable in that I assume.

In reply to Masher_Mfg :

That guy certainly has some broken stuff to show off!  The scale of some of the diesels makes it more impressive.  Wonder what some of those sounded like in the moment of breakage..

I felt a great disturbance in the motive force, as if millions of combustion events  suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced as I limped down the shoulder on the rim . . . ..

A few years ago we were at Reynolds GA for a Buick GN race.  A friend of mine brought his car with a brand new, $$$ Stage 2 motor.  On the first pass, it put a rod through the block and caught on fire.  I loosened the rest of the rods with a 3/8 ratchet; they were Carillo rods that should've been torqued to ~80 ft-lbs.  I don't think they torqued them on final assembly.
