Who has experience with what brands? Harbor Fright does not list any and I decided if I am going to order these, I would like to have a decent set.

I have the Lang tools kit and have had great luck with it:

Also available from Zoro:

where you can often find 20% off coupons.
I'm in the same boat as dculberson. Lang has served me well here, although I only have the Metric set. The only SAE vehicle I own is a 1974 cub cadet....
I have the red box version dculberson posted, but I bought it damned near 20 years ago from Sears with a Craftsman sticker on it that peeled off.
Still works excellently.
I have the Lang set. They make pretty much all of them that get rebranded to the big name tool companies.
Yep, same Lang set that everyone else has posted. I haven't broken any of them yet or run across a thred that wasn't in the kit.

That's the one I have but it has one repeat and not enough variety of metric thread pitches. So need another.
The Lang chasers are easier to use and don't tend to remove material as much/as fast as threading taps/dies. Hard to express how helpful this is until you try it ...
... on the negative side, they don't come in every size/pitch combination and I haven't ever seen singles (only sets).

1/4-24
But not many people work on ancient Harley Davidsons or Duesenbergs.

Snap-On sells singles.
They sell the same Lang's kit and carry singles for warranty.
I have the same set in the red box. It's never failed me.
This is the kind I prefer (another vote for the Lang):

This one says it's specifically for aluminum:

This one more closely resembles a tap:

It's worth mentioning that keeping them clean is the best way to keep them working well, and it's sometimes not easy to keep them clean. It's worth the effort.
Project farm just did a video this week about this, and Lang won.
I believe I rented a lang rebranded set from the parts store...so unless you need it I'd look at that cause it's basically free
That's the curse of Project Farm.
Now the Lang sets will be OOS and when they come back in stock the price will have risen by 25%.
I found while poking around that the 971 set is only slightly more and seems like some of the eight additional pieces over the 972 could be useful.
I also found out that Kastar is Lang is Kastar. Same shop, same people, same everything. I can't remember who bought who or rebranded as who.
Seems like stuff is out of stock a lot of places; I ended up ordering from a discounter (autotoolworld) who I'm quite concerned are simply going to tell me it's out of stock when I check in after their requested 7 business days... Summit showed it under the Lang name as being hopefully back in stock early November.
In reply to Jesse Ransom :
FWIW - I went to Autozone and rented the thread chaser again. (Not a shill, they're my least favorite box store in my area)
It looks identical to Lang/Kastar, and I'm pretty sure no one else has rented this set. Its great when you need it now, and don't want to pay for it.

Double-update: I tried to email autotoolworld today and my email bounced because their server's full. Since I can't contact them and have heard nothing about any shipping, I had an aggravating conversation with PayPal's chatbot and submitted a refund request there.
It now shows in stock at Summit (with no price increase!), though I'm going to hope that doesn't change while I give things time to process. If they did ship the thing I can't imagine what a clustersparkle trying to return it would be.
EDIT: Not worth a fresh post, I think. No explanation or response (which is understandable and fine) but autotoolworld got the PayPal memo and canceled and refunded my order; just waiting for PayPal to process it. In the meantime, Summit still says I should have my stuff on Friday, and as of today the #971 48pc set was $95.99, so apparently no YouTube price hike. ![]()
