I have a bunch of them of various sizes. They always need cleaning before I use them and when I'm done with them they tend to drip a trail of oil across the shop to wherever I happen to be storing them at the time. I need a better system. Who has a good funnel system?

I have a 20L pail that I let all my drain pans, funnels, and filters drip into after service (waste oil goes into the empty oil jugs).  Once they've drained thoroughly, they get wiped down and stored in the cupboard stacked in a measured oil fill jug.

Right next to my boring nels...

I've started storing them in a metal file cabinet drawer in my garage to try and keep the dust off of them. This has helped some.

Poorly

I just nest them inside each other as best I can. Obviously they get cleaned to some degree post use, but I thought SOP was to brake kleen and dry with a clean shop towel or rag before each use?

In multiple places, until I end up with multiple identical ones.

Does that answer your question?

Not a cloth "shop towel" or rag; you don't want bits of the fabric somehow getting into the engine or transmission.  Use paper towel - it's less harmful.

That looks like a neat solution, but an awful lot of footprint for funnels...

In reply to Jesse Ransom :

I've seen them down a post in a barn with less than 5gal and many more "branches". It's the concept, not the actual use for you.

I try to let whatever funnel I am using drain until I'm done working, then store them nested, pointy end up. Dust settling on the (mostly) dry outside surface is less of a problem than collecting on the oily inside.

I should probably build a post for them to rest on someday so they all drain into a tray or something. Even sitting flat, it's not much of a mess maker, given a little care.

I nest them with a paper towel between them

I store them pointy end up on a pig mat under my parts washer.  I hit them with brake clean when I'm done with them and I blow them  out with compressed air before I use them.

Correct I should have specified one of the blue 'shop' paper towels.

You'll need to log in to post.
