I think I saw 3 or 4 of them in the 4 digit range recently, and I wasn't even looking for one.
But that first image sure doesn't make me want to take a long drive in one.
I've seen a few of these converted to run a Buick 3.8, turbocharged in one case, supercharged Pontiac in another.
Isn't that 524td engine based off the regular BMW M20? I'm guessing that any of the 6cyl gas E30 engines would bolt up. A 2.7 L "super eta" gas six would be nice lateral move with much better parts support?
This one is nice. Wonder how much slop is in a shift linkage that long. Makes a tailshift 914 precise in comparison I bet.
The 2nd generation has a GM V-6 automatic that overheats. Also got rid of the pop up roof in favor of a fiberglass molded something that looks like an RV van. Tall enough that it won't in in the average garage like the first style. Some of the 1st Gen were sold as just people movers, not campers.

It doesn't.
I own two in e28s and yeah, agree. A lot of the stuff is available from Europe, but for a “road trip” vehicle, it’s suuuper nice to be able to just pop into advanceorileyquestzone and get a new whatever and get back on the road.
Doesn’t stop me from wanting a vixen, where else do you get a manual RV? Not in the cards for me, I need to ditch about 4 cars before I even have the room for that.

Thank you. I have always wanted a Vixen against my better judgement, but having owned—and decided I could not stand driving—a 914, I think you’ve cured me of that.
