For those of us who aren't familiar with the term, what's a 1x10?

One chainring up front (as opposed to 2 or 3) with 10 gears in the back. Basically, it allows for a pretty wide range of gears without the duplication you get with 2 or 3 rings up front, and less sloppy front-ring changes. It's a pretty nice setup, if you can use a wide-enough range rear cluster to account for your terrain. These days lots of folks are up to 1x12, but I used what I had laying around already.

That was a fun write-up to read. Nice build, too. Looks like a riot.

Fun build; thanks for sharing. The final result looks great! What ended up happening with the apparent crack at the seat stay/seat tube junction?

Are there any problems with the alignment of the chain, with that many gears on the back?  It would seem that at one end of the gearset or the other, the chain would be running at an extreme angle from the front sprocket.

I'm going to have to look for a modern bike to see how all those gears actually fit onto the rear wheel - I've owned the same ten speed bike for close to 50 years (I guess it would be a 2x5 using modern parlance) and I'm not sure how there would be space for twice as many gears on the rear wheel.

not really any problems. There is obviously some misalignment at the extremes of the cassette, but unless something else is wrong it isn't really worth noting. Factory 1x setups use a "narrow-wide" chainring with an alternating tooth profile that retains the chain much better, and without a front derailleur, there is nothing for the chain to rub if you are at the ends of the cassette. I don't know if it's due to chain technology getting better or what, but i have 1x12 on my mountain bike and i can't even hear any chain noise in 1st gear or 12th gear.

Sold a few bikes and made some space. Took a few of the vintage bikes off the insurance as well as I was not using them. Basically I had just been riding the streetfighter 100% of the time and commuting on a 220hp missile was getting old and horrible for shorter journeys so.

so a used 2025 Supermono 698 is now here and in the garage. With the w reduction from the V4 as the daily and less maintained it's basically saving me money each month.

Turned out to just be a defect in the brazing, not an actual crack. it was fine.

Back in the 2x5 days, rear axle spacing would have been about 125mm. It's now more like 130 or 135 (or even 142 on some MTBs), so they've gained an extra 5-10mm to work with, and also put the cogs closer together.

With old-school freewheels, like you likely have, you tap out at 7 or 8 gears, but only if you have the spacing for it (or stretch the frame) and you're REALLY likely to bend an axle because of the geometry of things.

In the 80s and 90s, everyone switched to freehubs, which fix the axle bending problem, and started adding cogs. From there, 7 speed is one standard, and then 8 to 10 speeds can be used on the same hub, but 11 is a different hub, and I don't know about 12. I've never gone that high.

A guy I know from track days at NJMP has one of those. He has a good shot at winning AHRMA Sound of Singles with it this season. Cool bike.

Picked up a left over '24 Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello S yesterday. Flew down to Richmond, VA Friday night. Picked it up at Moto Richmond. Best dealer experience I've ever had. 6hr, 340 mile trouble-free ride home, staying off major highways until the last 110 miles.

First street bike I've owned with handlebars!

In addition to a narrower chain and more-closely-spaced cogs, the furthest-outboard small cog now sits even closer to the dropout on the frame. Lockring design has evolved to help facilitate this.

The range and size of the gears has changed, and this inadvertently also helps allow more room. On a road bike, instead of a range from around 12 teeth to around 25 teeth (with two or three ring ups front to give a wider total range of gears) a 1x will have a range from around 10 teeth to around 42 teeth. The much bigger 42 tooth rear cog can sit further inboard by virtue of being bigger, because the spokes on the wheel are sloped. Modern rear cassettes are hollowed out on the back to fit cogs inboard over the spokes. 😁

Went for a nice ride today, but also some disappointment...  Most of the guys I rode with over the last 30 years had aged out of riding, and then we moved 300 miles away, and I've not had anyone to ride with.  I don't mind riding alone, and have toured border to border and coast to coast by myself, but it's nice to hang out with other riders sometimes.  I finally found a local group of riders that has a weekly meetup/ride and rode out to join them this morning.  It's always tricky to find a group you're compatible with, so I went with measured enthusiasm.  Lots of nice bikes, about 18 riders total.  The only bikes of similar 'vintage' to my Interceptor were a very nice RC51, and a ZRX that looked rode hard and put away wet.

When we pulled out, it didn't take long to discover things weren't going to go well.  The pack was immediately up to 70+ in a 50mph zone, with one rider doing a wheelie past the group in the right lane...  After the next turn, it was 65+ in a 45 into the center of town.

NOPE.  I'm out.  If this was how they were going to ride in town, I didn't want to be around when they got out on the highway.   Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a spirited ride, and have broken my share of speed limits.  But I've got enough experience and track time to draw the line for street riding at something well below "reckless".  I've seen people go to jail on group rides, and I've seen people die.  I don't want to repeat either experience.  I caught the 'rear guard' rider and signaled I was out, and went my own way.

And had a very nice ride.  About 100 miles of AZ back roads, and plenty of bugs smashed.  No tickets or trauma.  Just the way I like it.

That's disappointing. I would have bailed at the same time you did.

I have 1 long time best friend and riding partner. We'll open it up when it's reasonable to do so. Neither of us have much interest in riding with anyone else or going on group rides.
