There is a UCI minimum weight of 6.8 kilograms which is just under 15 pounds.  This is supposed to keep the teams from making bikes so light they are dangerous.

You can get a caad 10-13 down to that weight with some parts and that is not a light frame. My 12 year old carbon made with bastard parts is about 1lb off race weight and I am not a small person.

Going from aluminum or titanium to carbon was a game changer for me. But the big thing is the new brakes. I was just before the disk brake era and it makes everything just that much safer in a group. Especially downhill.

See I went the opposite direction and just bought my first Seven Ti.  It's about 1lb heavier than my cervelo was, but the "stiffness with compliance" benefits of the Ti bike over carbon was much welcome for this old body.  I might be slower, but I'm more comfortable and can go much longer now (thats what she said!).

A different but still insane challenge is the Race Across America.  One stage, on the clock, bike CA to NJ as fast as you can.  I happened to learn about this event when I was in WV at a time when many of the riders were coming through.  After days of near non-stop biking, they had to attack the hills of WV.  I happened to follow one dude down a hill (I was in my car) at 45-50 MPH.  Crazy.

I competely get the comfort thing. I rode a softride well over 12K miles when I was younger due to injury and I loved that thing. Sucked in the hills climbing but was a monster on decents. Again to fast for the brakes at the time.
