I have 5 hard drives in which I have all our family and miscellaneous pictures backed-up. Its one hard drive backed into the other 4 multiple times over the years and as a result there are a quite a few duplicated files and folders. There is also the problem that there are folders inside of folders and it became a maze of files that are difficult to clean. Its a mess and I want to fix this.

Is there a software that could reliably delete the duplicate files and folders? I would hate to lose a bunch of pictures of my kids growing up, so if I have to pay for a better/more reliable software I am ok with it.

Any suggestions of software to do what I want to do?

I've used fdupes to do this but it's a CLI Linux app, you might want to try dupeGuru in Contents Scan mode:

Thank you! I will download it tomorrow when I am at the office as I only have a Mac at home and I rather do it on a Windows computer.

Installed the software today and created a fake folder with a bunch of files, some duplicate. The software works very well and it is quite intuitive to use. I like that you can tell it to move the duplicate files to a separate folder and not delete them ... just in case.

I will bring my drives with me tomorrow and start working on this.

Thanks GameboyRMH for the software suggestion!
