I played the word TILDE recently. That’s the little squiggle line drawn over an “N” in some Spanish words like this: Ñ
Then I realized something… we have an English word for a punctuation mark that isn’t used in English, and it isn’t a Spanish word. In Spanish it’s called a “virguilla”.
Technically , in Spanish it’s not a punctuation mark. When rendered Ñ, it’s a different letter than N. It’s called eñe (en-yeh), which is different than N ene (en-a)- the same as our letter N. Spanish has 27 letters.
Sometimes I mix up my English and my Spanish. I’m too fluent in Spanglish.

Ouí, señor! Is now a good time to discuss ll (el-yay) and the proper pronunciation of “llama?”
In reply to 1988RedT2 :
“el-yay”??
All the Spanish speakers I know would call that “doble el-a”.
“LL” used to be considered another single letter, but is now recognized as a letter combination. Same way with “CH”.
In reply to SV reX :
Interesting. That conflicts with what I was taught, and CH and LL were definitely Letters of the alphabet. It may bear mention that my knowledge of Spanish was obtained 40 years ago and was taught by a teacher fluent in some dialect of Spanish spoken in Spain, though I cannot recall which one.
Edit: 90% sure it was Castilian, but definitely Iberian Spanish and not Latin American Spanish.
More edit: TIL the Spanish Royal Academy made the change in 1994 in order to make the language more “keyboard friendly.”
