That's the problem with pure mathematical theory.  It doesn't include multiplication by the Murphy Factor of "E36 M3, I think I skipped one of the combinations, and now I have to start over..."

I think it's 3^4, not 4^3. If you are working in binary (two possible values per digit), then it's 2^n where n=number bits you're working with. If you have 8 bits, each with two possible values, that's 2^8=256 values (0-255).

You have four possible values and 3 possible "bits". 4^n where n=number of knobs. I think you have 81 possible adjustments.

Edit. No. I'm wrong. It's 64. I can't read or math today apparently. Somehow I got set in that you had both four knobs and three knobs.

Is it okay to use stainless steel nylock nuts on a galvanized U-bolt on a boat trailer?  Any metallurgical  considerations?  Dissimilar metals?  etc.?

Why is it?

When we buy a tree seedling, dig a hole, fill it with rich, fertile soil, add fertilizer and water as needed and generally care for it, that little seedling will struggle to get bigger.  Eventually, if we have done a good job, years later it will have grown into a fine, sturdy, and handsome tree.

But, if some nasty bird happens to eat the fruit of some variety of tree that no one would ever want to cultivate, and it perches in our prized rose bush and poops out the wretched seed of that foul tree, it will grow with a vigor that defies understanding, reaching five feet into the air in a single season, as if it were shot out Zeus' own arsehole.

Why is that?

Sounds like nature has evolved to make the best of the situation, while we are trying to duplicate it in the not quite as elegant way.

So what kind of animal would destroy a cat but leave chickens alone?

2 days ago a very not afraid of humans, very much attention seeking male orange cat showed up by the chicken coop. Didn't have an interest in the birds so we left it alone. Child sees it falls in love because NO berkeleyING CATS because Dana is severely deathly allergic.

This morning I'm getting yelled at because there's just a pile of fur in the yard. No blood, no body.

I have to imagine anything that could or would take down a ~1 year old male cat would have cleaned out my chicken coop by now. I'm totally stumped as to what it could have been.

Plenty of predators around, hawks, Coyote, raccoon, possum, bear nearby but not seen on the street, muskrat. But they all LOVE chickens and I haven't lost any to predators in the past 5 years.

Yeah, that's weird.  I'm guessing the pile of fur leaves little doubt as to the fate of the cat?  Fur isn't necessary for survival.  Possible he got into a fight with another tomcat?

A quick search suggests coyotes, birds of prey, and possibly raccoons.  I've heard of dogs that can properly destroy a cat also.

Maybe? There are other loose barn cats in the area, I feel like I would have heard a fight right outside my bedroom window.

The lack of blood is really throwing me off, combined with the safety of my much dumber and less defensively built chickens. Even at the old house when I lost 7 chickens in a night, there was blood in the piles of feathers. There is no blood on the ground or the fur.

It may have gotten away into the woods and just lost the fur in the process of escaping.

Maybe an owl?

We've also had a chicken that's refused to coop up at night just wandering around for like 2 weeks and it's still alive and hanging out in the same places.

Weasels or something from that family?

We used to find pigeons in the barn that looked like they had been turned inside out.

Turns out that a number of years ago, the anti-fur freaks broke into a local farm and turned all the mink loose.

Mink aren't native to our former area and wreak all kind of havoc on the local wildlife.

What happened to Paris Van Gorder?

What kind of product can I use to get the corrosion off of these wheels?

The wheels are on my dad's 2001 F350. They appear to be Ultra Type 62 wheels from the mid 2000s.

Mother's Power Cone and polish? I'm assuming whatever I use will remove the clear coat as well.

[Not directly answering your question..]

If you wanted to start off by removing the clearcoat rather than polishing thru it, there's a reasonable chance CitriStrip will work.

It worked pretty well on the machined+clearcoated sections of some 90's Subaru Impreza wheels.  It was much less effective on the silver or gold painted sections of the wheels.

A question to which we'll likely never get an answer.  My guess is that she's moved on to bigger and better things.  She seemed a well-qualified and highly motivated individual.

I've not had much luck with similar corrosion on aluminum wheels.  You can improve them to a point, but it will be well short of perfect.  The BMW style 42 wheels I bought as refurbed had been machined down to fresh metal and re-finished.

In reply to 1988RedT2 :

Dang. I thought the wheels were mostly dirty until I looked closer. I didn't realize that they are that corroded.

I'm not looking for a concours level of restoration, just making them brighter and shinier.

I'm trying to keep the truck as original in appearance as it was nearly 20 years ago when my dad bought it, as tribute to him.

I mean, hey, I could be wrong.  You could really give them a good cleaning and see how much pitting there is.

I need a sanity check please.

I'm taking my late Father's 12ft aluminum boat back to NM. I will be driving his F350 and pulling his RZR 900 on its trailer. While I could throw the boat in the bed of the truck, the bow would be resting on the tail gate which would block my view of the trailer.

So I bought a utility rack for the bed. The rack has an 800lb capacity. My plan is to strap the boat to the rack.

I know the rack can hold the static load but I'm nervous about the wind load. The boat would be lashed to the rack and the tie down points in the bed. The boat weighs about 150lbs or so.

TLDR: I want to put this:

On this:

I wouldn't be going faster than 55mph with the trailer.

Tell me this is fine or that it's an incredibly dumb idea.

I think it would be fine, as long as you had the pointy end facing front, and had it close to level and not in a position that would catch a lot of air.  And 55 is a whole lot better than 70.  Just lash it down really well.

In reply to 1988RedT2 :

Thank you. That echoes my thoughts exactly. It will be secured with the hull facing up with the bow pointed forward. The racks clear the roof by just a few inches so it pretty close to the cab.

And I'm going to go overkill on strapping it down. Partly because I nervous about it coming off and partly because I'm worried that it will grow legs during my overnight stops.
