The last time we drove a Volkswagen Golf R, we had high praise for the car’s composure, rocket-sled speed and sophisticated, high-end GT nature. Still, we felt that the car wasn’t quite reaching its full potential.

And the current Mk8.5 Golf R, now with a minor facelift plus 13 more horsepower? More of the same–even after sampling the car on both …

It's like the regular Golf R,

but more black.

Dude it was so black.

It was also really hard to take detail photos because it was almost impossible to clean every piece of anything that would show up on the shiny black paint away from the photos. couple that with the fact that German water is super hard and even if you just pull out of the pay-and-spray and dry it off you're still going to get hard water spots that you just can't remove.

But, yeah, aside from that oddly specific auto-write problem, it's a rad beast.

And lookey there, poor Miata Guy in the photo is waiting for a point-by from the driver in the 328hp uber Golf. wink

I could live with one of those for a very long time.  Problem is that the market adjustment here ($5,000) at one dealership brings the price of one up to $59,000 and the other to $55,000.

The 50th Anniv Special Edition is also coming, and will also be overpriced.

I really dig that it has a special mode just for the Nürburgring. Can more car makers add that?

A Daytona mode? A Sebring mode? Sign me up.

Yeah I was both impressed to see it and impressed that it was actually the best mode. Like, by a long shot. I mean, maybe if I had several days to do proper testing with no traffic and ideal conditions I'd find a mode I liked better, but as a "jump in and go" options it was really strong and clearly better than the other options.

I think the big thing with the 'Ring is you just have to account for all the vertical displacement the car is constantly doing. Unless you spent time there you just have no idea how much constant vertical heaving is taking place. And not like bumps in the traditional sense, just constant vertical undulations that are always affecting how the car is behaving. It seems like VW really got around handling those inputs in some way other than just dumping all the compression out of the dampers and cranking the rebound to the moon because there's zero edginess at all in the setting.

The car still doesn't love doing multiple things at once on the 'Ring, but a lot of that is due to the fact that the track is always doing a couple things to begin with. So whatever inputs you make, you're like third in line to actually affect the car.

Excellent review, great to hear your experience driving the car at the Ring. Any accidental inputs on steering wheel buttons while lapping?

How annoying (or not) was the UI during street use?

Somehow I managed to stay away from the wheel buttons on track. Although at The FIRM in VWs and BMWs I always manage to hit something. This is one area where the VW's lower profile buttons actually pay off. it's harder to hit them on purpose, but it's also harder to hit them accidentally, especially with gloves. In our BMW 435i I hit the volume buttons on the wheel all the time. To the point where I make sure to tune the stereo to a "dead channel" so all the sudden Molly Hatchett doesn't start blaring on track.

The DIC isn't the best, but it's so much better than when they first did away with buttons. Now at least you have physical buttons for temperature settings, although fan speed changes still require at least two touches, and the sensor area for the fan speed is kind of small. If you're going to make me open a menu, give me HUGE buttons. It also does a few annoying things in Apple CarPlay, like not automatically launching Google Maps on screen when it's running on your phone. My Hyundai does a GREAT job with CarPlay integration, to the point where CarPlay almost seems like the car's base UX and I hardly ever finding myself having to hit extra commands to activate anything. VW usually launches CarPlay right away (not always, though), but it does always force you to activate any apps in the car you may have been already running on your phone. Again, not a dealbreaker, but other companies are already doing a much better job, so I don;t see why VW doesn't just rip them off.

One bit of praise I will heap on the VW DIC, though, it that it's gorgeous and extremely intuitive. Even if you have to hit extra layers of controls to do stuff, the layout makes those layers easy and natural to find, and the design is top notch. Very classy and timeless.

Just a data point.  I watched the Savagegeese review.  They put it on a dyno:  horsepower = 347, torque = 327.  That's at the wheels.
