“To you.” That’s the message from Toyota and its President and CEO, Koji Sato. Toyota showcased several concepts at the Japan Mobility Show, and the one of greatest interest to us is the Corolla Concept.
“We have infused the words ‘to you’ with the spirit of the Toyota brand,” Sato said. “We have long worked hard to make ‘Mobility for All’ a reality. But while standing on the front lines of manufacturing, there was always something that felt a little off.
“That something was … we often say ‘for all,’ but in truth, there isn’t a single product that perfectly suits everyone in the same way.”
Sato hinted that the new Corolla may offer a wide variety of powertrain platforms.
“The Corolla is symbolic of our ‘to you’―in other words, car-making for a specific someone.” Sato continued. “In line with the times and people’s lives, the Corolla has always transformed for the ‘you’ right in front of it.
“Regardless of its look or body type, it has always been the Corolla,” Sato continued. “That’s why the Corolla has always been ‘a car for everyone.’ To stay like that, how should the Corolla evolve?
“Whether it’s a battery EV, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, or internal combustion engine vehicle―whatever the power source―let’s make good-looking cars that everyone will want to drive! This car is packed with inventions aimed at making that a reality,” Sato later added.
Will the next GR Corolla look like this? Maybe? What will its powertrain be? The answer as of now is: Yes, it will have one, and possibly multiple options will be available.
It's funny, I really like that concept and think it's an awesome looking car. But I don't want the Corolla to look like that. For some reason I feel sad thinking about it. Like the "solid, reliable, unsexy car" that the regular Corolla is would be lost to the world if they made it so cool.

And cool is only one part of the car. The current Prius may be the coolest looking version yet, but functionally I note that its sight lines are worse and it's harder to get in and our of. It hasn't really rescued their sales slump either. Just like I prefer a truck to look like a truck, I prefer a sedan to look like a sedan.

......And sedans used to look like this.

I definitely see elements of the Prius and Camry with this concept, particularly with the nose.
I don't know why, but I dig this a lot. There's no way the regular Corolla will look like this, but this looks like a 4-door hypercar for commuting, and I'm here for it.
Also, I think Toyota did a killer job on the current generation of Corolla, both in sedan and hatch form. It looks aggressive and fun. If they made one that slotted under the GR Corolla with the power output of... say.. a Civic Si, I'd consider buying one. Toyota has been killing it lately.
