I am in the market for a new set of shoes for my RX8. It's probably gonna be between this new tire and the vitour.
For several years now, Bridgestone’s Potenza RE-71RS has been one of the top Super 200 tires for competition use and track days. Thanks to quick warm-up, it works well for both autocross and time trials.
Further, its high-silica compound gives outstanding grip in both dry and wet conditions, so long as the water is not deep enough to overcome its shallow 7/32-inch tread depth. This makes it a great choice for events like the SCCA Targa, where street use in various summer weather conditions is required in addition to the track.
Love those tires? Too bad. They are going away–soon.
Rumors have been swirling much of the year about a replacement model with even better grip and durability. And also some new big sizes to fill out the line. We know more, but have been embargoed against releasing any details.
That is, until somebody spilled the beans about the–wait for it–Potenza RE71RZ. (No more dash like the RE-71RS? Our info doesn’t mention it; more to come.)
Seems that a Bridgestone rep recently made a presentation to the Improved Production Racing Association of Australia, a grassroots racing org down under. You may have seen them on YouTube running in the support races at Bathurst.
Bridgestone would like their new tire to be considered for the group’s allowed tyre list for 2026, so they gave some details.
All of this can be found in the published minutes from that meeting. Items 6 and 12 in the minutes describe the situation.
Given that the SCCA deadline for new tires to be eligible for competition is now January 1, expect official announcements with more details near that time. GRM will be arranging to test a set ASAP.
PS: Online sleuthing credit to autocrosser Ryan Otis for the find.

Well I’m impressed…by Ryan Otis and I don’t even know him. The tire sounds promising. It’ll be nice to read your GRM review when it drops.
Eager to sample them, too. I remember when I first ran the old RE-11. It was fast, responsive and, at the same time, so darn civil.
Hopefully some wide 15" sizes for XB Miatas lol. 245/40 at minimum. Nankangs and Vitour's have issues warming up in the north.
I’ve been through several sets of the current version, they’re really good tires. I can’t wait to get the New and Improved!
