You know how Indy car drivers let go of the wheel and grab their belts when they crash? It's a good idea. I didn't do that last Sunday and after a mild impact with the tire barrier I'm scheduled for surgery next week to have my radius screwed back together. My left arm ended up inside the wheel while it got spun back and forth as the right hand side of the car climbed the tires and came back down. The car was able to drive into the trailer. I was not able to drive home.
Yep, always a good idea to let go of the wheel and grab the belts or cross your arms over your chest if you think a crash in unavoidable. I've been in 2 crashes where I thought about doing that but didn't because I don't know when to admit defeat I guess. Got pretty bad shoulder pain in both, one was bad enough to need a few months of PT, the other wasn't as bad and PT was recommended but I was too broke for it, healed up fine after a few weeks though.

Also if you can pull your feet off the pedals.
Knock wood I haven't crashed a car on track but I have managed to fling several motorcycles down the road. I've actually kicked the bike away from me.
My only injury in 38 years racing was because I didn't give up soon enough and the steering wheel rotated my arm several directions that it was not designed for.
You gotta know when to hold em...
And when to fold em.
Yup, I sprained my wrist that way before too.
That said, it is one of those things airbags can help with, shoving your hands off the wheel. (The one I crashed didn't have an airbag)
